Christine Down Under

The Forward Look... Since I bought my 1958 Plymouth Belvedere 4 door, I’ve connected with a bunch of fellow Plymouth fans all around the world via Facebook but never thought I’d meet another big fin Plymouth owner nearby. Helen and her husband Frank are the proud owners of not one Forward Look MoPar, but two (they also own a 1960 Dodge Phoenix). “The Forward Look” was the marketing ad slogan used for Chrysler Corporation cars from 1955-61, when big fins reigned. Since we met we have gone to many events and cruises in convoy together. Seeing one of these huge cars on the road is rare but seeing 3 in a row is a sight to behold. We always get lots of stares and smiles from onlookers when we go out together! So I thought I’d ask Helen a few questions about her beautiful Plymouth. Q. What is the car? A. Plymouth Belvedere 1957 2 door hardtop pillar less. Q. When did you get it/how long have you had it? A. Purchased in 2013 from Oregon USA. Q. Is it stock/original or modified in any way? A. No modifications that I know of, although some of the cosmetic details have been swapped to 1958 specifications (headlights, taillights, grille, side Sport-tone trim) to appear more like the Christine movie car. Q. Was the movie Christine part of the reason you bought your car? A. We loved the movie before we bought car. When it became available online we bought it. Sight unseen ...a very nervous process from buying to shipping..keeping fingers crossed she arrived safe.. Q. How often do you drive it? A. We try to get her out on a typically sunny Melbourne day when there is no rain on the radar. If other opportunities arise to drive her I jump at it.. I'm very passionate about the car. Q. Do you call your car “her” or “she”? A. Yes, her name is Ruby. Q. Has your Plymouth had any “Christine” quirky or strange moments? A. Quirky moment one day when my husband was working on side trim..he was drilling holes in body and BAD TO THE BONE came on...call it spooky I guess. Q. Do you get lots of thumbs up and comments driving in it? A. Very much a head turner on the road and in any public gathering that car enthusiasts enjoy. Quite a rare car in Australia ...and of course being red ... I get a lot of WOW! Theres Christine! I must admit that seeing Christine as a teenager was also very influential in my love of these cars and although mine is a 4 door (the Stephen King book version is a 4 door) I too get a lot of “there’s Christine” comments every time I drive it. I was able to take a few pics of our cars together last week. Enjoy!!
