National Automobile Museum of Tasmania

Last week I had the pleasure of checking out the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania located in Launceston, Tasmania. And the vehicles on display did not disappoint! A huge cross section of cars and motorcycles that span many eras and styles from brass era right up to modern day classics. Vehicles from all around the world with some very significant Australian ones are currently on display. One of the more unusual display vehicles was a 1974 HQ GTS Monaro. Any museum or collection would love an Aussie classic like this, but this one has a significant place in Tasmanian and Australian history. It was one of the cars left teetering on the edge of the Tasman Bridge after a bulk ore carrier collided with the bridge on the 5th January 1975. A large section of the bridge collapsed onto the ship and into the river below. Twelve people were killed, seven were crew of the ship, and five were occupants of the four cars which fell 45 metres after driving off the edge of the broken bridge in the dark. Certainly an important moment in history and quite amazing to see the actual car involved. The cars on display are always changing and every year they have 4 theme displays. The current theme is ‘Wide Open Road’ - (We Built Them Here). There’s also a mezzanine level with a large display of motorcycles if two wheels are more your thing! The museum also has a huge shop with plenty to satisfy most car nuts! Books, signs, stickers, die cast models. Plenty for the man cave!! This is a museum definitely worth the admission and one to return to as the displays are constantly changing. I was also informed that the museum is relocating later this year nearby but in a bigger and better venue. Looking forward to checking that out in the future. Located at 86 Cimitiere Street, Launceston, 7250. Open every day except Christmas Day 9am-5pm, (Winter times 10am-4pm) Telephone 03 6334 8888
